Abu Dhabi Waives AED 11.6M in Licence Renewal Penalties
Abu Dhabi has waived more than $3.16 million (AED11.6 million) in penalties imposed on 7,823 businesses for late licence renewals.
The exemptions were granted to commercial and industrial businesses under a three-month initiative launched by the Abu Dhabi Registration Authority (ADRA). The application period ended on August 15, with ADRA announcing the results on September 8, 2026.
ADRA introduced the initiative to support economic establishments that had failed to renew their licences within the required deadlines. Eligible businesses were allowed to have outstanding penalties resulting from delayed renewals waived.
More than 7,800 businesses completed the process during the programme. Based on the total value of the exemptions, each beneficiary received an average waiver of at least $404 (AED1,483).
ADRA operates under the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and oversees business registration activities across the emirate. Throughout 2026, ADDED has also rolled out several licensing initiatives designed to lower administrative expenses and help businesses remain compliant with regulations.
Mohamed Munif Al Mansoori, Director General of ADRA, said the strong response to the waiver programme demonstrated continued engagement between regulators and the business community.
“We continuously engage with the business sector to address their requirements and develop initiatives in line with applicable laws, regulations, and rules,” Al Mansoori said.
Earlier Programme Targeted Expired Licences
In October 2025, ADRA launched a separate licence regularisation initiative targeting economic licences that had been expired for three years or more.
Under Abu Dhabi’s regulations, licences that are not renewed are transferred to an expired registry. Those that remain expired for a minimum of three years can subsequently be subject to revocation.
