Audi Nuvolari Debuts With 987 HP as Limited R8 Successor
Audi has unveiled the Nuvolari, a limited-production mid-engine supercar that marks the brand’s return to the ultra-high-performance segment following the R8’s discontinuation.
Revealed during Monterey Car Week, the new halo model introduces Audi’s Radical Next design language, developed under Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella.
The Nuvolari combines an aggressively minimalist exterior with a high-output hybrid powertrain shared in its basic architecture with the Lamborghini Temerario. However, Audi has substantially reworked the system to deliver an estimated 987 horsepower.
The model also signals a new design direction for Audi. Moreover, elements of its Radical Next styling are expected to influence the company’s future production vehicles.
Audi Nuvolari design and performance
The Nuvolari uses exposed carbon-fibre body panels and avoids some of the elongated proportions typically associated with modern supercars.
Instead, Audi has focused on functional surfaces and mechanical detailing. The front grille, for example, features a billet aluminium construction with variable-pitch louvres.
At the rear, an active wing incorporates an aluminium Audi logo, combining branding with aerodynamic functionality.
The mid-engine layout houses a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 alongside an electrified powertrain. Furthermore, Audi has equipped the system with a larger 7.3-kWh battery and three electric motors.
Combined output is estimated at 987 horsepower, placing the Nuvolari above the Lamborghini Temerario despite the two models sharing core powertrain architecture.
The V8 itself can reach 10,000 rpm, while the hybrid system provides additional performance across the power band.
Audi is targeting a top speed of more than 217 mph. However, controlling that level of performance requires an extensive chassis and braking package.
The Nuvolari therefore uses Audi’s Quattro Predictive Ride system alongside large carbon-ceramic brakes. As a result, the car combines its high-output powertrain with technology designed to manage stability, traction and high-speed performance.

Inside, Audi has taken a different approach from the increasingly screen-heavy cabins found across the automotive industry.
The Nuvolari uses physical controls and metal components throughout the driver-focused interior. Climate vents are machined from black-anodised aluminium, while manual levers control airflow.
Additionally, thin carbon-fibre seats use manual adjustment, reinforcing the car’s focus on driver engagement.
A rearview display replaces a conventional mirror because the extensive heat-exhausting structure over the engine bay limits rearward visibility.
Audi also moved rapidly from the initial proposal to a working prototype. The company completed the transition in just 405 days.
Production will be limited to 499 examples worldwide, making the Nuvolari one of Audi’s most exclusive modern road cars.
The starting price is expected to be around $700,000. European customers are scheduled to receive the first 200 allocations during the first half of 2027.
Another 200 units are planned for the United States from 2028, while the remaining vehicles will be allocated to selected markets across the Middle East and Asia.
The Nuvolari, therefore, represents more than a successor to the R8. It introduces Audi’s next design philosophy at the top of the range, with elements of the Radical Next language expected to influence the brand’s future production models.
