Dubai Airports Unveils Major Upgrade to Cut Passenger Processing

Dubai Airports has introduced Click and Travel, a mobile border processing service for passengers travelling through Dubai’s airports. The system enables airport staff to complete entry and departure procedures in approximately 12 to 15 seconds per transaction.

The service combines facial recognition, electronic passport scanning and secure connections to official databases to complete each clearance. As a result, passengers can undergo border formalities without having to stop at conventional immigration counters.

Click and Travel moves border processing from fixed counters to mobile devices operated by airport personnel. Staff can verify facial biometrics, scan electronic passports and retrieve official records as part of each passenger transaction.

Dubai expects the technology to shorten waiting times and improve passenger movement through both arrival and departure areas. The announcement covers citizens, residents and international visitors using the airports.

GDRFA Dubai already operates next-generation smart gates for passengers arriving at and departing from Dubai International Airport (DXB). Registered travellers can pass through passport control within seconds through biometric verification.

According to GDRFA guidance, iris biometrics form a key part of the verification process. Smart Gate services operate as a self-service option and do not carry an additional fee.

Click and Travel follows a different model, with airport personnel completing passenger transactions using mobile devices instead of directing travellers to conventional immigration counters.

Details released on September 7, 2026, have not yet outlined the terminals covered by the service, registration requirements or a complete schedule for its rollout.

DXB Handles 31.5M Passengers in First Half

Dubai International Airport handled 31.5 million passengers during the first six months of 2026, while second-quarter traffic reached 13 million passengers.

Aircraft movements reached 150,600 during the six-month period. By the end of June, nearly 50 international airlines were connecting DXB with 217 destinations across 99 countries.

Passenger processing continued at high speeds across the airport’s major checkpoints. Dubai Airports reported that 98.98 per cent of departing passengers completed passport control within 10 minutes.

At arrival passport control, 98.95 per cent of passengers were processed within 15 minutes. Meanwhile, 99.34 per cent of travellers completed security screening in less than five minutes.

Click and Travel is designed specifically to accelerate the border processing transaction. However, the overall passenger journey also covers airline procedures, security checks, terminal transfers and boarding.

Dubai Expands Biometric Processing at DXB

Dubai Airports announced a broader programme of passenger processing upgrades on August 26, 2026. The plans include increased self-service capacity alongside the continued expansion of biometric technologies.

DXB is also introducing a consolidated remote departures experience, enhanced operational capabilities and targeted improvements to airport capacity. Upgrades focused on passenger movement form another component of the wider investment programme.

GDRFA Dubai’s data highlights the existing scale of automated border processing across the emirate. Smart Gates recorded 24.2 million uses during 2025.

During the same year, Smart Corridor services recorded 56,900 uses, according to data published by GDRFA through its open-data platform.

Dubai has also introduced biometric systems designed to process passengers without requiring repeated document checks. GDRFA reported in 2025 that intelligent monitoring and data analysis had helped reduce waiting times by 40 per cent.

Mobile Clearance Adds Capacity Beyond Fixed Counters

GDRFA figures published in 2025 showed that next-generation smart gates and seamless corridors had reduced individual processing times to less than nine seconds.

Terminal 3 also features the Red Carpet smart corridor in its Business Class Departures area. Artificial intelligence enables multiple passengers to be processed simultaneously, without requiring physical travel documents during the clearance stage.

Click and Travel introduces an additional border processing channel by giving airport personnel mobile clearance capabilities. The equipment enables officers to complete passenger formalities away from traditional fixed counter locations.

Dubai’s digital border infrastructure is already designed to manage substantial passenger volumes during peak travel periods. Between December 29, 2025, and January 3, 2026, Dubai’s airports processed 1,272,246 travellers.

GDRFA data includes Smart Gate and Smart Corridor users within this overall passenger figure. Digital processing helped support faster passenger clearance during one of Dubai’s busiest seasonal travel periods.
