Dyson Enters Dental Care With $499 Camera-Equipped Toothbrush

Taking care of your teeth is usually simple: brush, floss, rinse, and you’re done. But Dyson is looking to change that with its new CameraJet toothbrush, launched on Tuesday. The $499 device features an AI-powered camera designed to identify gaps between teeth and deliver targeted mouthrinse to those areas while you brush.

“Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth,” Founder and Chief Engineer James Dyson said in a press release. “We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing.”

A Camera that Captures your Teeth

The CameraJet features a 100,000-pixel macro camera paired with a built-in light. It runs on Dyson’s trademarked AI machine-learning system, Gap Optical Targeting, which was trained using 470,000 dental images gathered by the company during development.

Gap Optical Targeting processes 28 live images every second to identify gaps between teeth in as little as 100 milliseconds. Once a gap is detected, the CameraJet’s jet releases a burst of mouthrinse into the area, effectively flossing it.

The CameraJet also supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, enabling its camera to function as an endoscope. Users can view a live feed through the toothbrush’s live-viewing or auto-jetting modes. The accompanying app provides coverage maps, guided cleaning features, brushing and flossing insights, and personalised feedback.
