McLaren Revives the Legendary M6GT With a One-Off Heritage Masterpiece

McLaren Special Operations has unveiled a one-of-one recreation of the legendary M6GT, bringing one of the brand’s most significant road-car concepts to life more than five decades after it was first envisioned. The handcrafted model will make its public debut at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, celebrating Bruce McLaren’s original ambition to build a road-going supercar for the emerging British manufacturer.

The bespoke project combines original body molds from the late 1960s with archival engineering drawings and an authentic M6A race chassis. As a result, the finished vehicle remains remarkably faithful to the design and engineering philosophy behind the original concept.

A Faithful Tribute to Bruce McLaren’s Vision

Rather than modernizing the car with contemporary technology, McLaren focused on preserving its historic character. The one-off M6GT features a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter small-block V8 equipped with period-correct “camel hump” cylinder heads. Additionally, a traditional manual gearbox delivers power to the rear wheels, allowing drivers to experience the car much as Bruce McLaren originally intended.

The restoration team also invested significant effort into recreating the smallest details. Engineers used advanced digital scanning to reproduce the distinctive curved windshield with exceptional accuracy. Meanwhile, specialists sourced rare imperial-era suspension bearings to maintain the vehicle’s original mechanical specifications. Consequently, the suspension geometry mirrors the behavior of the original M6GT as closely as possible.

The exterior wears a bespoke shade called “Colnbrook White,” a tribute to McLaren’s original workshop’s location. Inside, a vibrant green interior references the livery of the iconic 1966 M2B Formula 1 car, further strengthening the connection to the brand’s early racing heritage.

Launching a New Chapter for McLaren Heritage

The completed M6GT represents more than a one-off collector’s car. Instead, it establishes the foundation for a new heritage collection within McLaren Special Operations, highlighting the company’s commitment to preserving some of its most important historical vehicles.

The project also carries emotional significance. Bruce McLaren famously used an early M6GT prototype as his personal road car before his untimely death in 1970. This modern reconstruction, therefore, serves as the closest realization of the vision he never had the opportunity to fully complete.

The exclusive M6GT will appear at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside several of McLaren’s latest performance models, including the upcoming MCL-HY endurance racer and the highly anticipated W1 hypercar. Together, the lineup reflects the brand’s ability to celebrate its racing legacy while continuing to shape the future of high-performance automotive engineering.
