Tesla Roadster Set for October 1 Reveal With Hovering Demonstration
Tesla has announced an October 1 reveal event for its new Roadster through a teaser image and a countdown on its official website.
The artwork features a red vehicle under vertical lighting, alongside the date “10.01” and the caption “Go for launch.” However, Tesla has not yet confirmed the event location or broadcast details.
A Roadster Designed to Hover
The planned demonstration is expected to focus on SpaceX-developed cold gas thrusters integrated into the vehicle. These systems are designed to enable the Roadster to hover, with the demonstration car operated remotely and no driver on board.
Due to the extreme noise generated by the thrusters, observers are expected to remain hundreds of yards away to avoid the risk of permanent hearing damage.
The event also highlights the technological relationship between Tesla and SpaceX. It comes as Elon Musk seeks investor support for a potential merger between the two companies, making the demonstration as much a corporate spectacle as a vehicle reveal.
Not the Roadster Originally Promised
The vehicle shown on October 1 is expected to differ significantly from the consumer sports car announced in 2017. The original prototype promised a $200,000 starting price, a 620-mile range and a top speed above 250 mph.
Reservation holders paid up to $250,000 for a Founders Series allocation, initially targeted for 2020 production. However, manufacturing delays continued, with targets reportedly missed at least eight times.
Musk later stated that production would not begin until 2027 or 2028. The extreme-hovering version is reportedly intended for a limited-track program aimed at Tesla superfans rather than for conventional road use.
The upcoming Roadster is therefore shaping up as a high-cost, non-street-legal technology showcase rather than the everyday performance EV originally promised.
