Ferrari Patent Reveals New Active Aerodynamics for Future Hypercars

Ferrari has filed a detailed patent application outlining an advanced active aerodynamics system designed to increase downforce while preserving the clean exterior design of its high-performance cars.

The filing, submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, describes aerodynamic components that can change position while a vehicle is moving. Therefore, Ferrari could adjust airflow and downforce according to driving conditions without relying on large fixed wings.

The patent focuses on a futuristic mid-engine hypercar concept with a design that differs significantly from Ferrari’s current production range. Moreover, the filing also illustrates how similar technology could potentially be adapted for the Ferrari Purosangue.

The technology reflects a broader shift in performance engineering as automakers face tighter emissions regulations and increasing pressure to improve efficiency. Instead of relying solely on additional engine power, manufacturers are exploring aerodynamics, electrification and advanced vehicle control systems to improve performance.

Ferrari hypercar patent introduces active aero

The hypercar shown in the patent features an extremely low front end and an aggressive aerodynamic profile. The design appears to draw inspiration from the Ferrari 849 Testarossa, while its rear architecture adopts a much more experimental approach.

Large Formula 1-inspired louvres dominate the rear section, while a diffuser extends toward the upper aerodynamic elements.

Additionally, the vehicle uses an open aerodynamic channel behind the cockpit rather than a conventional glass engine cover. This creates a direct path for airflow from the upper body towards the rear of the car.

The most unusual component is the integrated rear light bar.

Under normal driving conditions, the light assembly remains positioned beneath the primary rear wing. However, when additional aerodynamic load is required, the mechanism can move the light bar rearwards.

This movement effectively creates a longer aerodynamic profile at the rear of the vehicle.

As a result, Ferrari could increase the effective length of the rear aerodynamic structure without permanently extending the vehicle’s bodywork.

The system is designed to manage airflow from multiple areas of the car, including the roof and underbody diffuser. Therefore, the active components could help maintain airflow attachment across the rear surfaces while increasing aerodynamic load.

Ferrari Purosangue could receive active aero technology

The patent also presents a more production-oriented application involving the Ferrari Purosangue.

Instead of using the complex rear architecture shown on the hypercar concept, the SUV application integrates movable components into the rear lighting assemblies.

According to the patent drawings, the taillights can move upwards and pivot towards the road surface. This changes the airflow beneath the rear window, directing high-pressure air towards the existing rear spoiler.

Moreover, integrating the aerodynamic mechanism into the lighting units could allow Ferrari to increase downforce without adding a large fixed wing to the vehicle.

This approach would preserve the Purosangue’s relatively clean exterior while giving Ferrari another way to manage airflow at higher speeds.

The patent does not confirm that Ferrari will put either system into production. Instead, it demonstrates the company’s exploration of active aerodynamic technology across different vehicle formats.

If developed further, the approach could become particularly relevant to Ferrari’s future high-performance models, where aerodynamic efficiency and downforce are increasingly important alongside powertrain performance.
