DIFC Courts Launch Blockchain System to Verify Judicial Documents Globally

Dubai’s DIFC Courts have launched a blockchain-based verification system that enables court orders and hearing records to be authenticated worldwide within seconds.

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts have started issuing judicial documents with unique, non-transferable digital credentials. These credentials allow banks, government bodies, courts and other recipients to independently verify the authenticity of official records.

The initiative aims to minimise delays in authenticating judicial documents across international borders, offering greater certainty to businesses and individuals relying on the Courts’ services.

Under the new system, every court order or hearing record is assigned a unique digital credential that can be verified using blockchain technology.

Upon issuance, a cryptographic fingerprint of the digital document is linked to a non-fungible token (NFT)-based credential recorded on the Avalanche C-Chain public blockchain.

Recipients can check the document against its digital credential to confirm that it originated from DIFC Courts and remains unchanged. Any alteration to the original file causes the verification process to fail.

The system does not store court documents directly on the blockchain. Document contents and confidential case information remain off-chain, preserving the privacy of sensitive judicial records.

The verification mechanism is particularly significant for international businesses and individuals that use DIFC Courts to resolve disputes.

Through the Courts’ opt-in jurisdiction, parties without any direct connection to the UAE can choose DIFC Courts as their dispute resolution forum. When judicial documents are submitted to institutions or authorities overseas, recipients may need to verify their legal standing and authenticity.

The new digital credential system allows recipients to independently establish a document’s origin and integrity, potentially reducing the time and administrative burden associated with traditional authentication procedures.
