Painless Tattoo Machine Promises a New Ink Experience

Startup CipherX has unveiled a new tattoo technology that aims to redefine the traditional tattoo experience through microneedle engineering. Presented during an event in London, the company’s microdot tattoo system replaces the conventional tattoo machine with a patch-based application designed to deliver tattoos with minimal discomfort.

The system combines a loading dock, a handheld applicator, and a disposable patch embedded with microscopic, dissolvable needles containing the chosen tattoo design. Rather than repeatedly puncturing the skin, the patch transfers pigment in a single application before the microneedles dissolve.

Microneedle Technology Simplifies the Tattoo Process

To apply the tattoo, users press the patch onto the skin using the handheld applicator. The microneedles immediately begin transferring pigment while gradually dissolving beneath the skin. The patch remains in place for approximately 10 to 15 minutes before it can be removed.

Initially, the tattoo appears faint. However, the pigment develops over the following days, revealing the final design. According to CipherX, the aftercare process is straightforward. Users simply need to keep the area clean for the first 24 hours and avoid activities such as intense workouts, saunas, or anything that could expose the skin to excessive moisture.

The technology was developed by founder Ferdinand Kohle, who launched CipherX in 2020 after working in both the pharmaceutical and design industries. Motivated by his own fear of needles, Kohle began exploring how microneedle technology, already widely used in skincare treatments, could transform tattoo application.

“What started as a personal question evolved into a much larger exploration of how tattooing might be redesigned using modern engineering, manufacturing, and human-centered design,” Kohle said.

A New Direction for Tattoo Technology

CipherX has begun offering appointments at its flagship location in West London, with additional availability planned at select pop-up events and through collaborations. At launch, customers can choose from a curated collection of minimalist tattoo designs, including simple symbols and graphic icons.

Despite introducing a different application method, Kohle emphasized that the technology is not intended to replace traditional tattoo artistry. Instead, CipherX plans to collaborate with tattoo artists while focusing on small, highly detailed designs that suit the platform’s capabilities.

“The sweet spot is these smaller iconographic tattoos,” he said. “A sleeve is definitely not what we’re going for.”

Looking ahead, the company also sees opportunities beyond cosmetic body art. Kohle believes the same technology could eventually support medical applications, including smart tattoos that change color in response to body temperature, UV exposure, or other physiological indicators.

As wearable technology and biomedical innovation continue to converge, CipherX’s microneedle platform offers a glimpse into how tattooing could evolve beyond self-expression and become part of future health-monitoring technologies.
