JLR and Chery Unveil FREELANDER 8 Ahead of UAE Launch

A familiar British automotive name is preparing for a comeback, combining Chinese automotive technology with plans to enter the UAE market.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chinese automaker Chery have unveiled the international five-seat version of the FREELANDER 8, the first model under a new standalone premium SUV brand developed through their partnership.

The vehicle debuted at the 2026 Chery International User Summit in China. FREELANDER also introduced an AI-powered voice assistant and signed distribution agreements with partners in Bahrain and Oman.

The FREELANDER 8 is expected to enter the UAE market in the first quarter of 2027, although pricing and final specifications have yet to be announced.

The launch will test a partnership that combines JLR’s British design heritage with Chery’s technology, manufacturing capabilities and supply chain.

The Freelander Name Returns as an Independent SUV Brand

Originally launched in 1997, the Land Rover Freelander became an established part of the British marque’s SUV portfolio before production ended in 2015.

Rather than reviving it as a conventional Land Rover model, the companies are developing FREELANDER as an independent automotive brand.

Under an agreement announced in 2024, JLR retains ownership of the FREELANDER brand and oversees design through a dedicated design hub.

Chery contributes vehicle technology, engineering and manufacturing expertise, drawing on its experience in China’s rapidly evolving electric and electrified vehicle market.

FREELANDER is intended to operate independently of JLR’s Range Rover, Defender and Discovery brands, as well as Chery’s existing vehicle portfolio.

The partnership gives both companies an opportunity to expand their market reach. JLR contributes premium SUV design and brand positioning, while Chery provides the technological capabilities and industrial infrastructure needed to compete in an increasingly electrified global automotive market.

FREELANDER 8 to Offer Five- and Six-Seat Configurations

The newly unveiled international five-seat FREELANDER 8 will be offered alongside a six-seat, three-row variant, giving the brand two configurations to address different customer requirements.

The SUV draws design inspiration from the original Freelander, featuring what the company describes as a castle-style body, a yacht-inspired waistline and a distinctive triangular side window incorporating the letters F and L.

Technology is central to the vehicle’s premium positioning. Its intelligent cockpit features a 46.3-inch Mini LED display and Qualcomm’s SA8295P automotive-grade computing platform.
