Tesla Cancels Cybertruck Plans for Australia and New Zealand

Tesla has discontinued plans to launch the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand, ending years of uncertainty for customers who placed reservations for the electric pickup. According to reports cited in the supplied article, the automaker has emailed reservation holders to confirm the cancellation and outline deposit refunds.

Customers will receive a refund of approximately AED 386, based on the reported US$105 deposit, within 30 days of confirming their details via email. Tesla is also offering affected customers one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) access if they place a new order for a Model 3 or Model Y.

Right-Hand Drive Limits Cybertruck Expansion

The cancellation reportedly reflects manufacturing and regulatory barriers. Tesla’s Texas factory was not configured to produce a right-hand-drive Cybertruck, limiting the vehicle’s potential availability in markets such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan and Ireland.

Without a right-hand-drive version, the pickup faces significant obstacles to road approval in these countries. The decision, therefore, ends the planned rollout for reservation holders in Australia and New Zealand.

European Regulations Present Further Challenges

The Cybertruck also faces regulatory hurdles in Europe, where vehicle safety requirements cover exterior design, lighting and weight classifications.

The report highlights concerns over the truck’s rigid stainless-steel body and sharp edges, which may conflict with European pedestrian-safety standards. Tesla has not officially launched the model in the UK or the European Union, although individual imports may be possible through specific approval routes and modifications.

The regional cancellation underscores the challenges of adapting the Cybertruck’s design and manufacturing approach to international markets. For now, Tesla’s electric pickup remains unavailable through an official launch in Australia and New Zealand.
